Signs, Stationery and Promotional Material

The Companies Act 2006 sets out specific obligations and requirements for companies regarding signs, stationery and promotional material.


The law states that a company must display a sign showing the company name at its registered office and at any other premises at which the business operates. The sign must be easy to read and visible at all times.

If the business is being run from a residential property, a sign need not be displayed there.

Stationery and Promotional Materials

The company’s name must be included on all company documents, publicity and letters.

Business letters, order forms, invoices and websites must also detail:

  • the company’s registered number;
  • the company’s registered office address;
  • where the company is registered (England and Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland); and
  • the fact that it’s a limited company.
